August 24, 2012 - One perspective of the issue is the transition from film to digital itself reduces the craftmanship and authenticity of the movie. The outsourcing itself is a symptom of a departure from movie production as an art to facsimile. What do you think?

The International Alliance Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 58 (Toronto Chapter) picketed outside TIFF Lightbox to protest the outsourcing of their work to Deluxe Entertainmment Services Group. They inspect, prepare, and project the films. Because of the shift towards digital media versus celluloid film, TIFF's Jennifer Bell argues that the work cannot be done in-house, and thus must be outsourced. IATSE union members argue that such work is in fact done in-house throughout the year, that they are qualified to do the type of work that is being outsourced, and that the outsourcing is therefore a breach of contract.
Whatever the perspective, it seems disloyal to me that the TIFF institution outsourced work it appears the IATSE local 58 is willing and able to do, and has done for 30 years.
